Our furniture is made from recycled wine barrels sourced from Washington State. White oak is an excellent material for outdoor furniture, resistant to rot, mold, and warping this furniture will last even with the most minimal maintenance.
Surface : Our chairs have two main surfaces, toasted and stained faces, and natural patina oak faces. The portions of the chair which have a red hue, have been toasted by a cooperage as part of the barreling process to allow the oak to better interact with the wine, this process softens the wood and allows it to absorb more wine stain giving it that beautiful color. After the chairs are finished they will not stain clothes, though the wood is much softer. If and when you refinish the furniture yourself, be very careful not to sand through the toasted portion of the wood. This will remove the wine stain. The natural patina surfaces are the outer faces of the wine barrel, exposed to weathering, sun bleaching, and dirt adding to the character and depth of the wood grain. We leave as much dirt as possible in the grain to retain that character.
Dust and Dirt : White oak is a open grained hard wood which is highly durable. The most significant challenge in maintaining outdoor wooden furniture is protecting it from UV damage. White oak will sun bleach to a pleasant grey color and the grain will raise and splinter. Dust and dirt will get in between the grain fibers and develop a natural patina helping to highlight the grain pattern. Barrel Bros is a huge fan of this developed patina and we chose to leave as much dirt and detail in the grain as possible. The patina will act as a sunscreen for the wood and will extend the time between maintenance.
Finish : We use a "simple finish" also known as "danish oil" which is a blend of boiled linseed oil and thinner, Tung oil and polymerized linseed oil may also be used for a zero VOC finish. Danish oil penetrates the wood fibers to protect and rejuvenate the wood from within, enhancing the wood grain and protecting from UV and moisture. We do not use varnish on our outdoor furniture simply because it is high maintenance and requires the furniture be kept out of the sun (hard to do in the tri cities).
